How long to use whey protein before switching cycles?

Sorry if the question if misunderstood. But like how long would you use whey protein for and then switch off to something different. I heard before or read it somewhere that you should stay on a certain supplement for no longer than 3-4 months. Would like to hear from people opinions on what they take and do to gain muscle throughout the year, thanks!
