Why does my cat's paws twitches at first while drinking water?
Every time my cat goes to drink water his left or right paw twitches for a moment then he continues drinking. Why is this?
Ever seen someone knead dough before? Kittens knead their mother when they're breastfeeding. They do it instinctively. It's necessary to massage the glands to get the milk to come out.
A paw twitch when drinking water is just kind of a little reflex. Your cat starts to do the kneading action, but is instantly reminded it doesn't need to. A hard floor is not like mom at all, and water doesn't taste like milk. The thirst is still satisfied so the lack of kneading is rewarded & reinforced. This vestigial action may fade as your cat grows or stick with him through out his life. It's nothing to be worried about. It's just kind of cute & funny.
