Why is this formula true (protons + neutrons = mass #)?

The sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus equals the mass number. Why is this formula true?

An atom is made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The mass of an electron is so small that it is negligible and is not counted. The mass of a proton is equal to the mass of a neutron (both are 1). So, only protons and neutrons are counted. If each proton and each neutron is 1, then the mass of the atom is the number of protons plus the number of neutrons.
