what are the effect of antacids on protein absorption?
I understand that pepsin is necessary to break down protein (among other nutrients), and that antacids could logically interfere with the release of pepsin, since its release is linked to HCl production. However, are there any studies on this connection? I haven't been able to find any. Maybe protein absorption occurs in more places than just the stomach, and antacids just neutralize acid in the stomach, thereby not really affecting the whole process? Is this possible? I'm into bodybuilding, so protein absorption is critical for me. Thanks for any help.
There is negligible effect (net absorption of proteins)...
The only enzyme delayed, as explained above, is pepsin, secreted ONLY in the stomach,and its action is quite negligible, even raising the Ph of the stomach or making it closer to neutral, (7,0),
And pepsin is only ONE of too many enzymes that the small gut posess..

The main area of absorption is the small gut that has plenty of proteases (trypsin, chemotrypsin, carboxypeptidases, etc,) and other enzymes that are especific for cleaving in certain proteins of the aminoacids (tryptophan, hydroxyphenil alanine etc) and enzymes that split protids into small dipeptides or two aminoacid molecules...
The net result, is that, protein absorption is NOT affected at the end, by the use of antiacids...^The small gut, in normal conditions, corrects that Ph "flat" secretion of the stomach...
