What is the best way to put on weight? Do the mass builders work?
Ive been working out for over 6 months now and take creatine and protien daily i went from 155 to 165 bout want to get up to around 180 any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Since your goal is not absurd I will hold back on the sarcasm that is flowing so freely from my fingertips today. First off.....Mass builders do NOT "work". There are no magic pills or powders with the exception of steroids (which you should not take). Getting to 180 is a noble and realistic goal........even if I don't know your height. The way to get there is simple. Simple....but not easy. The problem 99% of people come up against is trying to make it too complicated. They do too much....too often. Look back to the early days of weight training to see what you need to do. Look back to before the early 1960's when steroids simply did not exist in the USA. Look back to guys like John Grimek, Clarence Ross......go back even farther to the late 1800's/early 1900's and check out guys like Arthur Saxon, John Garon or Sigmund Klein. If you don't know these names you SHOULD! Do your homework. These guys got big AND strong in a time when there were no drugs, supplements, machines or a lifestyle that afforded them the luxury of eating every 3 hours. But nevertheless they got big and stayed big and didn't die from steroid induced heart failure at age 50. (Saxon did die in his 40's but it was from Pneumonia). Anyway.....these guys got big by using a limited number of compound movements that usually involved nothing more than a barbell. A "few" sets......not 20. ONE exersise per muscle group.....not 5! 2-3 workouts per 7-10 days.......not 7-10 workouts every 2-3 days! No silly isolation exercises....just the barbell and maybe some dumbbells. These guys ate real food.....not sugar, HFCS, processed food and "supplements". These guys SLEPT 8 hours a night......they didn't go out to clubs until 4 am doing exctasy and then wonder why they didn't make gains. These guys trained to get stronger.....not for a meaningless burn or pump. If they DIDN'T get stronger they found a way to do so. And lastly...these guys trained HARD. Herman Goerner did a ONE handed deadlift w/ over 700 lbs. Saxon has held the record in the bent (not bench) press. He did 374 lbs. almost 100 years ago.....to this day the record stands. A guy like Louis Cyr (fat but strong) could could put a 300 lb. bag of grain over his head any day of the week. Few of todays steroid monsters could manage these feats.
So...Barbell...5-7 compound exercises.....squats and deadlift are MANDATORY....Sleep...Eat....No isolation exercises...no supplements.....1-2 sets (excluding warmups).....whole body workouts every 48-72 hours. And of course, INTENSITY. Lifting within your limits is a waste of time.
