How do you get rid of kidney stones in a dog?

It was discovered that my grandmother's dog has kidney stones. The vet said that he needed surgery. It this necessary & is there a medication to the stones pass?

There are prescription diets that can help prevent kidney stones, and can even dissolve them if they are caught early. If your vet says the dog needs surgery this is probably true - stones that are too large to pass are usually too large to dissolve as well. Go forward with the surgery as planned, and make sure to talk to your vet about a kidney health diet after he's recovered. Good luck.
